Mama Nasrah Smith a.k.a. Mama Osun, was a Midwife in Georgia for over 45 years beginning in the 1970’s. She primarily serviced families in rural and urban areas throughout Georgia and focused on bringing traditional customs to Midwifery. Hence the name of her Midwifery services, Birthing Strong Communities. In her later years of service, Mama Osun held great interest in lowering the Maternal and Infant disparities among Black families. and learning ways to secure better birth outcomes. She coined the phrase “Maternal Wellness” because she believed we must speak what we want to attract to ourselves.
